Treatment

The good news is that the condition is highly treatable. Not only that, in the majority of cases simple, inexpensive medical care has dramatic results.

Field clinics visit communities with medical supplies and advice on straightforward measures such as regular washing of the legs with disinfectant, moisturising the skin with cream and treating between the toes with antifungal ointment. This, combined with wearing support socks and shoes, can produce a great deal of improvement and at least stop the condition getting worse.

It is usually possible to restore mobility, banish pain and massively improve social acceptability for the sufferer.

If the disease is tackled reasonably early a complete cure is perfectly possible.
For very severe cases these clinics offer a route to hospital treatment and possible surgery.
